Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHA or ADHD) - Channel this excess energy using natural remedies.

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder is a development and psychiatric disorder and is characterised in children (more boys than girls) by attention problems and hyperactivity. It is a chronic disorder and about half of children continue to suffer into adulthood.

There are a variety of conventional medicines used to help control the problem, one of the most commonly used being Ritalin.

It is a very frustrating condition both for the child and their parent/carer as initially the child just seems to be badly behaved and the parent short on parenting skills.

Much has been written on the whys and wherefores and I won’t attempt to re-examine these all over again. Quite frankly the parent (and the child, if it did but know it) just want to be able to enjoy life normally without the constant feeling of being in trouble or faced with confrontation. Very often the child is of above average intelligence and becomes quickly bored and consequently very disruptive.

A very worthwhile first move is to ensure the child receives adequate levels of omega-3 oil – Flax oil preferably (very low levels have been found in ADHA children) also evening primrose oil.

Moving on to essential oils, research has indicated the following to be of benefit

Vetiver, Vitex agnus castus (Chaste tree)

To stimulate cephalic activity the following oils should also be included in a massage carrier oil of Coconut light fraction (distilled)

Nutmeg, rosemary, peppermint, eucalyptus

The Rosemary and peppermint should be added at a low dose of about 50% of the other essential oils.

A separate blend of Eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, peppermint essential oils blended into Grapeseed carrier oil and applied to the soles of the feet will help to reduce hyperactivity and increase attention span.

As a standby premix 1 drop each frankincense, roman camomile, lavender, bergamot or mandarin, for inhalation on a tissue for panic attacks or anxiety feelings

The same oils can be used in a burner or essential oil fan to induce an overall feeling of calmness and clarity to both child and parent.

There is some evidence that supplements of Lithium and Zinc are possibly effective and your local health food shop can help with suitable tablets.

A very powerful treatment is Reiki administered by a qualified Reiki Master or practitioner. Although the child may be initially reluctant the calmness and the feeling that the child is controlling their own behaviour/destiny can be a strong spur.
