Anorexia Nervosa - Help the person to love their body and encourage healthy nutritious eating.

Anorexia Nervosa is simply defined as loss of appetite but this is an oversimplification of a morbid desire not to eat caused by a serious psychological problem predominantly in young girls and women.


The use of essential oils is not a cure for this problem but can help support and supplement counselling and psychotherapy.


What we are trying to achieve is to bring the sufferer into contact with their own body, which many of them dislike or even loath. This can be brought about by massage either by a trusted friend, family, or professional masseur. Anorexic sufferers visualise their bodies as overweight or bloated when in actual fact they can be severely emaciated.


Before I discuss the subject of essential oils to use I should mention Bach Remedy Crab Apple which has proved very successful and can be used in conjunction with the oils.


The choice of oils must be to suit the individual preference but should be selected from the following anti-depressant essential oils – Lavender, German Camomile, Neroli, Ylang-Ylang and Clary Sage. Bergamot should be included as it is known as an appetite regulator and can improve the desire to eat; it is also a powerful uplifting oil. Angelica Seed is also an oil that encourages eating and is particularly recommended for those who are weak, debilitated, underweight and of a nervous disposition.


In the case of young girls Anorexia can be a symptom of them being afraid of growing up and achieving the sexuality of an adult woman. Here we can use Rose Otto essential oil as it is ideal to reinforce their sexuality on every level, both physically and emotionally and gives them a feeling of being pampered and an increasing degree of self-esteem. As an alternative you could use Jasmine or even both together.


When it becomes apparent which oils suits the best 4 drops of 3 of them can be added to a warm bath or made up into a massage oil. Every couple of weeks change the oils used unless the patient has a particular like or dislike. The choice of oils must be driven by the person.


The massage oil should use a rich carrier and Avocado or Argan oil will give a satisfying glow to the skin which is good therapy in itself, particularly if the patient can apply it herself. If the richness of the carrier oil causes problems with clothes then use Grapeseed oil which will be absorbed and leave just a satin sheen.


We mustn’t forget that a high level of vitamin and other supplements are essential (particularly vitamin B complex and Zinc) and small meals of fruit (dried and fresh), nuts and raw vegetables. These foods are high in nutrients but are not seen as a threat as they are considered slimming. Gradually a wholefood diet can be re-introduced. The use of juiced fruit or vegetables, or in combination, will be of great benefit.


Another treatment that has proven very successful is the use of Reiki which the patient will find very non-threatening and non-invasive as it can be carried out without a medical environment and fully clothed. The benefit is that they will feel that the desire to eat has come from within. However make sure that you use a qualified Reiki practitioner.
